6. Middle 1

OPENING The same as Upper 1.

TURN THE WAIST

ACTION 1: Unclench the hands with the palms down.

ACTION 2: Turn the hands to double zhuangzhang.

ACTION 3: Turn the body to bring the arms behind, lowering them to hip height. The stance may turn.

ACTION 4: Turn to face forward and bring the arms to the front, still in double zhuangzhang position, rising back to shoulder height. Then continue to turn around in the other direction until the arms are behind and lowered.

Repeat actions 2-4 five or six times.

CLOSING The same as Upper 1.

There are three difficulties with this exercise. One: how to turn properly, staying in a firm stance but allowing it to turn. Two: how to settle the qi to the lower back. You must open up the kidney are and fill it with qi. This area determines whether or not the upper and lower bodies are connected. Three: how to expand the lower back. You must turn completely around without getting twisted up. The lower back must be expanded and full so that it remains solid when it turns.
